Mitchell's Miscellany

I like music, film, videogames. Tea and coffee are my two vices. Failed photographer, struggling author, better than average pianist, and a self-proclaimed intellect.

Everyone knows that I bash mainstream music probably more than anyone.

I decided to listen to Skrillex’s Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP in full (previously I had only listened to the title track), ridding my mind of any prejudices I have had in the past before I began. I did this because I do not believe you should be allowed to bash and dismiss something without actually experiencing it. So I listened to the EP.

It wasn’t bad, so here’s a short “review”.

PROS:

  • Opened well
  • Had a fun, energetic feel to it all. Think mountain dew but in musical form
  • Slightly creative. Skrillex is at his best when he is focusing more on the electronic melodies rather than the heavy “wub wub wub” of the bass

CONS:

  • It falls down when Skrillex decides to try and make the nastiest, heaviest, “drops”
  • The rapping on “Scatta” felt out of place and was unnecessary (but it had a nice Mad Men reference)

Also it is not dubstep, or brostep. It’s heavily influenced by those genres, but it’s more EDM-y/electrohousy.

Best Track: Rock n’ Roll

Worst Tracks: Scatta and Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.
